VES Awards Qualification Changes, VES Celebrates SIGGRAPH

By CHRISTOPHER MCKITTRICK

18TH ANNUAL VES AWARDS

Each year, the VES Awards Committee refines the Rules and Procedures in response to the remarkable creative achievements and technological advancements happening in the VFX industry. For the 18th Annual VES Awards, there have been significant changes to the qualifications in the “Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a CG Project” and the compositing categories. Animated projects will now be able to compete in these four categories. As in prior years, the fifth entry slot in six of the eight general categories is reserved for a project’s Special Effects Coordinator or Supervisor.

VES will hold its worldwide Nomination Event across the globe on January 4, 2020. As they vote on the nominees, VES members are invited to view the most amazing visual imagery of 2019, including exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, while also participating in the single best networking opportunity of the year.

And finally, the nominees for the VES Awards will be celebrated when the winners are announced at the 18th Annual VES Awards Show on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

VES CELEBRATES SIGGRAPH 2019

The Visual Effects Society, in partnership with its Los Angeles Section, held the VES SIGGRAPH Party on July 30 in downtown Los Angeles.

VES members from around the globe and their guests took some time away from the busy conference to meet fellow members who make up the best and brightest in the visual effects field. The hugely popular event, which was free to VES members, gave SIGGRAPH attendees the opportunity to enjoy one of the many benefits that VES offers its global membership.

VES was also highlighted during SIGGRAPH week at Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Women in Tech networking breakfast, along with Women in Animation, Women in Tech/Hollywood and the Association for Computing Machinery’s Council on Women in Computing (ACM-W). Camille Eden, VES member and Manager, Recruitment/Outreach at Disney Animation organized the event which drew a capacity crowd. VES Board of Directors Executive Committee member Rita Cahill addressed the packed house providing an overview about our Society and the important role women play in our industry.
